In separate announcements yesterday, New England solar equipment suppliers Evergreen Solar and GT Solar said they’d won big contracts from companies in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.
Marlborough, MA-based Evergreen (NASDAQ: [[ticker:ESLR]]), which manufactures silicon solar panels using a proprietary “string ribbon” process, said that it had signed one contract with North American solar wholesaler Mainstream Energy Corporation and its subsidiary AEE Solar and another with an unnamed Japanese trading company. The two orders—for panels that will produce more than 160 megawatts of power, all told—will be delivered over a three-year period stretching from 2009 to 2012, the company said. Evergreen didn’t specify the amounts of the contracts, which bring the company’s total backlog of solar-panel orders to more than 1 gigawatt.
GT Solar (NASDAQ: [[ticker:SOLR]]) of Merrimack, NH, released a more detailed announcement, saying that Taiwan-based Top Green Energy Technologies had ordered solar cell manufacturing equipment worth $46.8 million. The order included reactors, converters, and other equipment Top Green needs to make polysilicon photovoltaic cells. It was GT Solar’s first sale to a company in Taiwan, and its “most comprehensive polysilicon production equipment and services agreement to date,” according to the announcement.
