Applying advances in molecular biology, we are engineering microbes capable of producing bioactive chemical compounds that are currently available only in limited quantities. This process, developed in the laboratory of Amyris’ founding scientist, Professor Jay Keasling at the University of California, Berkeley, gives us access to compounds unattainable by conventional chemical synthesis and eliminates the challenges associated with harvesting chemicals from natural sources.
