I love Thursdays, because that’s the day I get to sit down and write World Wide Wade, my wide-ranging column on digital media and Internet culture. We launched the the column in April 2008 and somehow–without really being conscious of it—I’ve now written 80 of the things. We decided to mark the occasion by collecting all of the columns in the form of an e-book called Pixel Nation: 80 Weeks of World Wide Wade.
Not only does the e-book bring all of the columns together in one easy-to-read place, but it includes a new introduction and updates on many of the early columns (which, frankly can benefit from some updating in the fast-moving world of high-tech).
There are several ways to read the e-book. It’s embedded below as a Scribd document, so you can read it right here in your browser, if you like. We’re also offering a free PDF version that you can read on your PC—to get that, just click on the “Download” link in the Scribd window below. Finally, there’s a $4.99 Kindle version that you can read on your Amazon Kindle or your iPhone. You can find that on Amazon’s website or by searching the Kindle Store on your device.
For more on how we created the e-book, and some of the issues facing authors who want to self-publish their books electronically, see my February 5, 2010 column, which is also the final chapter in the book.
Enjoy! I’d love to hear your feedback about the e-book—write to me at [email protected].
Between 2007 and 2014, I was a staff editor for Xconomy in Boston and San Francisco.
Since 2008 I've been writing a weekly opinion/review column called VOX: The Voice of Xperience. (From 2008 to 2013 the column was known as World Wide Wade.)
I've been writing about science and technology professionally since 1994. Before joining Xconomy in 2007, I was a staff member at MIT’s Technology Review from 2001 to 2006, serving as senior editor, San Francisco bureau chief, and executive editor of TechnologyReview.com. Before that, I was the Boston bureau reporter for Science, managing editor of supercomputing publications at NASA Ames Research Center, and Web editor at e-book pioneer NuvoMedia.
I have a B.A. in the history of science from Harvard College and a PhD in the history and social study of science and technology from MIT. I've published articles in Science, Technology Review, IEEE Spectrum, Encyclopaedia Brittanica, Technology and Culture, Alaska Airlines Magazine, and World Business, and I've been a guest of NPR, CNN, CNBC, NECN, WGBH and the PBS NewsHour. I'm a frequent conference participant and enjoy opportunities to moderate panel discussions and on-stage chats.
