3. Dragon Dictation — Like its iPhone counterpart, the free Dragon Dictation app for the iPad lets you write by speaking, which can come in handy if you don’t like the iPad’s onscreen keyboard or if you aren’t in a place where you can set your device down and type on it. It’s amazingly accurate. Each note you dictate can be copied into the clipboard and pasted from there into other text-generating apps such as Pages, or forwarded via e-mail.

I have a B.A. in the history of science from Harvard College and a PhD in the history and social study of science and technology from MIT.
