SkyGrid — This venture-backed startup built all of its news apps around a patented “Information Velocity” algorithm that highlights the fastest-changing stories on the Web. The Android version of SkyGrid has become one of the most popular news apps in the Android Market. Pros: Lets you subscribe to general topics such as “Fitness” or “Apple” as well as specific publications. Cons: As a company, SkyGrid has been around since 2005, and its first iOS app came out in early 2010, before most of the other news readers. But in terms of its design, the iPad version of SkyGrid is a too-flattering imitation of Flipboard. Also, some users may balk at seeing so many ads inside a news-reader app (though you can’t really blame a startup for trying to monetize a free service).
