A new set of renderings issued Monday offer a more detailed glimpse of what is in the works for Cornell NYC Tech as the public review process begins for the plan to create this applied science and engineering school.
The $2 billion campus to be built on Roosevelt Island—based on a plan by Cornell University and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology—is expected to create a talent epicenter for the New York technology innovation scene.
Plans for the forthcoming 12-acre campus include an energy-neutral academic building topped with a solar panel array to generate some of its power (see image, left). The first phase of the project also calls for space to house technology companies on campus to collaborate with researchers and students.
Construction on the campus is expected to begin in 2014, though Google has already offered up space at its offices in Chelsea to house classes as early as 2013. Cornell NYC Tech is scheduled to open the first part of the campus by 2017, which will also include housing for students and faculty as well as an executive education center and hotel. The entire project is slated to be complete by 2037.
