Texas Deals: Austin Startups Gazzang, Phunware, Structured Polymers

Here is the latest technology and innovation deal news from Texas.

—Austin, TX-based data-security software company Gazzang was acquired Tuesday by Cloudera, a big-data analytics company in Palo Alto, CA. Terms were not disclosed. Among Cloudera’s investors include chipmaker Intel. Gazzang, which will become the Cloudera Center for Security Excellence, was founded in 2008 and its investors include Austin Ventures and Silver Creek Ventures.

Phunware announced Tuesday it has bought Simplikate, a Miami software company, to expand throughout Central and South America. Alan Knitowski, founder and CEO of the Austin-based mobile apps company, said that the Florida city—and Latin America—was high on his list of targets in an interview last March. Simplikate makes mobile apps for shopping venues, including Tyson’s Corner mall in Virginia and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Structured Polymers, an Austin 3-D printing startup, has raised $1.5 million in seed funding, largely through MicroVentures, a crowdfunded venture capital firm based in San Francisco. Structured Polymers makes polymer powders for use as ink for 3-D printers and was founded two years ago at the Austin Technology Incubator at the University of Texas at Austin.
