Boston Tech Watch: Leonardo DiCaprio, MC10, OwnerIQ, BrainCo & More

With the holidays approaching, here is what’s been going on in the local technology scene:

—San Francisco-based Cloudflare acquired Eager for an undisclosed price. The Cambridge, MA-based startup says its technology makes it easier for websites to install apps and software tools. Cloudflare offers Web performance and security products and services. You can read more about the deal from Cloudflare and Eager.

—Daily Pnut, which went through the Techstars Boston startup accelerator earlier this year, said it was recently acquired by Media Mobilize, a San Francisco-based digital media firm. Deal terms weren’t disclosed. Daily Pnut runs a daily e-mail newsletter focused on global affairs.

OwnerIQ said it raised $6 million in an initial close of an investment round that could grow larger. Read more about OwnerIQ, which provides digital marketing tools and consumer data analytics, in this Xconomy Q&A with CEO Jay Habegger from May.

—MC10 has raised $5 million from investors in the form of promissory notes and warrants that can be converted into preferred stock, according to a new SEC filing. The Lexington, MA-based company makes wearable sensors for monitoring biological data.

—Somerville, MA-based BrainCo said it snagged $5.5 million in funding led by Boston Angel Club, Han Tan Capital, and Wandai Capital. The startup was founded in February 2015 and incubated at the Harvard Innovation Lab. It’s developing wearable technology that can measure brain activity and potentially help young people improve their ability to focus. BrainCo said it has already received 20,000 orders from an unnamed China-based company.

Knowmail said it closed a $3.5 million investment led by CE Ventures. The company is building an artificial intelligence engine that helps professionals manage their e-mails, social media notifications, and other communications. Knowmail was born in Israel but moved its headquarters to the Boston area last year.

—Actor Leonardo DiCaprio was named a “special advisor” to Boston-based venture firm Data Point Capital. DiCaprio is also an investor in Data Point. He’s not expected to join the boards of any of Data Point’s portfolio companies, but he will likely help source deals and give portfolio companies a boost through press and other activities, Data Point managing partner Mike Majors told BostInno.

—MIT announced the eight student-led teams selected to participate in the inaugural session of DesignX, its new startup accelerator focused on businesses and technologies related to real estate, design, and urban planning. Read more about the companies and the program here.

—Cambridge Innovation Center continues to add more locations to its network of co-working spaces. This month, the CIC signed leases for offices in Philadelphia and Providence, RI, according to media reports. The CIC’s first location was in Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA, but it has since opened outposts in downtown Boston, St. Louis, Miami, and Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.
