—UW-Madison researchers were able to accurately identify people with fragile X premutation, a genetic condition that inflates the risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders and infertility, by analyzing recordings of them talking. The university said the researchers, who published a study earlier this month in Scientific Reports, used machine learning algorithms to analyze voice recordings and assess whether the people speaking were at increased risk of developing certain health complications. The researchers concentrated on analyzing voice recordings because Marsha Mailick, a UW-Madison professor and one of the study’s authors, and colleagues previously found that key information about the families of people with fragile X premutations can be gleaned from their speech, according to the school.
