The Future of Life Sciences in New York: Xconomy to Convene its First Big NYC Event Oct. 13

I had only been at Xconomy a couple of weeks when I realized how hot the topic of biotech’s future in New York truly is. It was April, and I was one of the members of the press at the New York Biotechnology Association’s 20th annual meeting. The first panel I attended had a provocative title: “The Global Struggle for the Biopharmaceutical Industry: New York Must Step Up Its Game!”

The title perfectly describes the anomaly of life sciences in New York: The city offers world-class resources such as top-notch universities and close proximity to pharmaceutical powerhouses like Pfizer and Merck. But issues ranging from high taxes to lack of government support have made it challenging for life-science entrepreneurs to choose New York over better-established biotech hubs like Boston and Northern California.

So what can scientists, academicians, entrepreneurs, and legislators do to make New York a life sciences leader over the next 20 years? That will be the topic of Xconomy’s first major New York event, titled Xconomy Forum: New York Life Sciences 2031, an after-work panel event on October 13.

We have assembled a stellar lineup of panelists:

Les Funtleyder (moderator), Health Care Strategist and Portfolio Manager, Miller Tabak Health Care Transformation Fund

Samuel Waksal, CEO, Kadmon

Barbara Dalton, VP of Venture Capital, Worldwide Business Development and Innovation, Pfizer

Sam Isaly, Founder and Managing Partner, OrbiMed Advisors; Manager, Eaton Vance Worldwide Health Sciences Fund

Eric Schadt, Director, Mount Sinai Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology; Chief Scientific Officer, Pacific Biosciences

The panel discussion will take place at the Apella Event Space at Alexandria Center for Life Science, with opening remarks from Joel Marcus, CEO of Alexandria Real Estate Equities. The evening will include a reception and plenty of time for networking, too.
