10gen Raises $20M, Plans New Overseas Offices

New York’s 10gen said in a press release Monday it raised $20 million in a funding round led by Sequoia Capital. Prior investors participating in the round include Union Square Ventures and Flybridge Capital. 10gen developed and maintains MongoDB, an open source database used by such companies as Viacom, Foursquare, and Disney.

So far 10gen has raised more than $31 million since 2007 when it was founded by CEO Dwight Merriman and chief technology officer Eliot Horowitz. Merriman was a co-founder of DoubleClick and Horowitz was an engineer with DoubleClick.

10gen plans to use its latest funding on customer service, to expand research and development in Asia and Europe, and to open new offices in Ireland and Britain. The company also hired Erik Frieberg to serve as its vice president of marketing and alliances.
