The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has been awarded 60 grants worth a combined $40.4 million under the $787 billion American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, otherwise known as the federal stimulus. The Hutch estimates that 2.3 jobs in the community are created or retained for every $100,000 of grant funding, so the awards should create about 920 jobs. The research will focus on a number of projects, including developing tests to measure cancer related proteins, cord blood transplantation, and cancer economics. Winning the competitive grants is “a testament to the quality of the science we do,” said Hutch president Lee Hartwell, in a statement
