Catriona Jamieson, an assistant professor of medicine in the hematologic malignancies program at UC San Diego and director of the stem cell research program at the Moores Cancer Center has identified a promising cancer treatment. Jamieson specializes in leukemia and myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs), a family of unusual degenerative disorders in which the body overproduces blood cells. Her goal is to find more-selective and less toxic therapies. She is completing the first clinical trial to target cancer stems cells in humans.
