Katharine Zaleski co-founded PowerToFly to solve a very personal problem that affects women across the globe. After the birth of her daughter, she had two choices: go back into the office for ten hours a day or slowly cut back on her hours, and ultimately, her career. Instead she launched PowerToFly in August 2014 with Milena Berry and it’s now the fastest-growing platform placing women in jobs they can do from anywhere. After one year, PowerToFly has processed nearly $3 million in paychecks for mothers, grandmothers, caregivers and women without children who are simply looking for better career opportunities.
Katharine has been in startups since she was the sixth employee at The Huffington Post. She was the site’s Senior News Editor for the first four and half years. In 2009 she moved to The Washington Post as the Executive Director of Digital News. After two and a half years there, Katharine wanted to be a founding team member again, so she joined NowThis News as its first Managing Editor. It was during her maternity leave from NowThis, when she told her boss, Ken Lerer, that she wanted to co-found PowerToFly. Ken’s VC firm, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, subsequently led PowerToFly’s seed round. Katharine lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter Charlotte, who is clearly the ultimate inspiration behind PowerToFly.
